Law Enforcement is one of the seven mandates of Sheriff in Colorado. The Sheriff and his deputies have the authority to enforce state laws countywide. However, the Sheriff traditionally defers direct response to criminal complaints to the cities and towns within his county.

The Patrol Section of the Sheriff’s Office is the most visible section of the agency. Uniformed Deputies in marked and unmarked cars patrol the county to prevent crime and to respond to reports of crimes that have occurred.

Unincorporated Larimer County is divided into 7 separate patrol districts. Five of those districts are located in the valley and the two others cover the Estes Park area as well as the Red Feather / Poudre Canyon areas.

Additionally, the Town of Wellington subcontracts with the Sheriff’s Office to provide law enforcement services within the Town.

All patrol deputies are expected to enforce state traffic laws as well as the Larimer County Model Traffic Code. Because of the significant volume of complaints about traffic violations, a traffic enforcement unit was formed. They primarily focus on enforcing traffic laws on county roads and in residential neighborhoods.

In addition to their normal patrol duties, deputies have the opportunity to join specialized units which provide them opportunities for additional training and experience. These duties include K-9, SWAT, Hostage Negotiations, Field Evidence Technicians, Bomb Squad and more.
