2010 Citizens Academy

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office has announced open registration for the 2010 Citizen Academy which will start September 9th 2010, See SCHEDULE tab for Details.

The Academy will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. at the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Administration Building, 2501 Midpoint Drive in Fort Collins, and other locations as noted on SCHEDULE tab.

Information, applications and class schedule may be obtained at the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Front Desk or HERE (on-line Click on APPLICATION tab above).

Applications must be returned in person no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, August 20th, 2010, along with a valid Colorado driver's license and cash or check in the amount noted -- Please see the APPLICATION tab for specifics.

Classes for the 2010 Academy include:

• Crime Lab presentation and tour
• SWAT including Bomb Squad
• Communications Center presentation and tour
• Emergency Management and Emergency Operations
• K-9 demonstration
• Patrol procedures
• Investigation procedure including polygraph
• Detention Center tour
• Criminal Impact Unit
• Arrest Control/Use of Force
• Volunteer opportunities for citizens

"This Academy gives the general public a good overview of law enforcement, what we do and how we do it," Sheriff Alderden said. "Those who have attended previous academies said they not only gained insight to the everyday workings of the Sheriff's Office, but also had a great time."

• Meanwhile the following are a few rules, regulations and hints to make your adventure with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office a most enjoyable experience.

Rules, Regulations and Hints

1. Instructors and Academy Directors have the right to dismiss anyone from the Academy who violates any safety policy during Academy functions.
2. Classes are Thursday evenings from September through December as noted in schedule. We do expect participants to attend each session.
3. During any training session at LCSO, for the safety of employees and other Citizen Academy participants, no weapons are allowed, including knives. This rule applies even if you have a Concealed Carry Permit.
4. Feel free to get a cup of coffee or use the restroom at any time. If the presenters are going past 9:30 (and some do), feel free to leave whenever you like.
5. You are expected to attend one full day session on Saturday, September 26. On that day you will perform actual car stops, fire “simunition” weapons and research a crime scene. Lunch will be provided by Sheriff Alderden. This portion of the Academy is very important. Please make every effort to attend.
6. You will be issued a key to the building that will be active on Thursday evenings only from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
7. You are asked to arrive no earlier than 6:00 P.M. on class days and are expected to exit the building directly after class unless you are accompanied by an employee.
8. Please confine your unescorted activities in the building to restrooms, lunchroom and training rooms.
9. We are extremely proud of this building and waited a long time to get it. I’m sure you will respect it as we do.
10. What you hear or see in this building must remain confidential. What happens at the Sheriff’s Office stays at the Sheriff’s Office.
11. Remember that this is a large class combined with the fact that the presenters have so much to say. Please hold your questions and comments until the end of class. Chances are your questions will have been answered in the normal course of the presentation.
12. If you need to schedule a ride-along or if you need to speak with either of us about any administrative activities, please come before class, 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
13. Allow only those with our Citizen Academy ID into the building. If you forget your ID and key fob, use the phone in the lobby and have Dispatch page Eloise or Karen to let you in.
14. Karen and Eloise are always willing to talk with you and the Sheriff has an open door policy – for citizens as well as employees.

DURING YOUR RIDE-ALONG

1. NOT BRING ANY WEAPONS OF ANY TYPE ON YOUR RIDE-ALONG.Even if you have a Concealed Carry Permit, you still may not bring any weapons. Do not even bring a knife let alone a gun. According to one of the sergeants, leave the grenades and bazookas at home.
2. Please dress in attire appropriate for being seen by the public as a representative of the Sheriff’s Office. Do not wear flip flops or t-shirts with sayings.
3. Dress in layers and bring warm clothing.
4. Communicate with your deputy. Let him/her know when you need to use a restroom. Ask questions. BUT when he’s listening to the radio, hold your thoughts. He can’t listen to the radio and you at the same time.
5. You may request one of following shifts:
   1. Day shift goes from 6:45 AM to 5:00 PM.;
   2. Swing Shift starts at 4:15 PM and goes to 2:30 AM.;
   3. Midnight shift starts at 9:00 PM and goes to 7:15 AM.
6. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the shift.
7. If for some reason you can’t make your ride-along, please call Dispatch at 416-1985 and have them page the on-duty Sergeant to let him know you won’t be riding. Do not call Eloise or Karen.
8. Most citizens ride for five hours or so. How long you ride is up to your deputy but he/she can bring you back to the Admin Building only if his time and location permits. And there’s always the possibility that you may be out past the usual end of shift time.
9. Bring water and power bars just in case the street is so busy that the deputy is unable to stop for a meal.
10. Do everything the deputy tells you and do it quickly, i.e., “Get on the Floor.”
11. Bring your ride-along stories to the next Citizen Academy meeting.

HANDS-ON FIELD DAY ON SATURDAY - ALL DAY

1. No Weapons.
2. Wear long sleeves and long slacks.
3. Bring snacks, lunch will be provided.
4. Expect to be outside all day.
5. You will take part in an analysis of a crime scene and processing an after-crime vehicle.
6. You will do an actual car stop in our parking area.
7. You will spend four hours learning the fine art of shooting including when to pull the trigger and when to hold back.
8. We guarantee you will be tired at the end of the day and you will love it.

Class size is limited.

Applicants to the Academy must meet minimum requirements:
1) 18 years of age
2) no felony convictions
3) no misdemeanor arrests within one year of the start of the academy.
4) must be a resident or business owner in Larimer County
5) Applicants are expected to make a personal commitment to attend all classes.
6) Applications subject to review and approval by the Sheriff.
