The First Bull Sheet

By Eloise Campanella

I wanted to call this column, “…And other duties as assigned.” That phrase at the end of my job description seems to get me involved a myriad of things here at the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. I don’t mind. In fact, I like the variety associated with my position as Public Information Officer. Of all my tasks, however, the most important is to convey information to the public. Some items are not important enough to be considered “newsworthy,” but certainly complete the picture, hence, “The Bull Sheet.” Unlike what the title of my column might suggest, I will present the reality of the Sheriff’s Office and its men and women. I will also try to paint a picture of patrol happenings and what goes on at the Detention Center, something I’m just learning myself.

Each morning I now receive the Detention Center “Daily Shift Logs,” parts of which I will pass on to you. It is certainly an eye-opener for me and hopefully will give you insight as to what goes on behind those mysterious walls. You will need a primer for terms. “Sanction” and “waiver” in essence means 23 hour lockdown (inmates must remain in their cell) with one hour for shower, meals and recreation. “30 EI” means inmate was placed on a 30 minute watch for emotional instability. The following are excerpts from those logs:

“(Inmate) very emotional during intake, never been to jail and is now charged with felony, began crying. Cpl. Purrier spoke with him and placed him on 30 EI.”

“(Inmate) manipulating, trying to get medications. Verified this through his phone call to wife. Continues to escalate towards medical as he feels he needs narcotics for the pain. PVH also confirmed that they had to turn him away in the past for seeking meds. His wife also admits when talking to him that she has been trying to manipulate free calls to him by telling booking she is in labor or having her brother call in as if he was an attorney. Monitor further.”

“Commissary items stolen from (Inmate). By the time all was done:

  • - (Inmate) on 20 day waiver - theft, verbal altercation, inciting a fight,
  • - (Inmate) on 15 day waiver - theft, clogging toilet (with the stolen commissary)
  • - (Inmate) pending sanction - inciting a fight, verbal altercation, derogatory remarks
  • - (Inmate) pending sanction - inciting a fight, use of threats.”

So far for the month of March, LCSO deputies have made 183 arrests, with 66 people being taken off the road for suspicion of driving under the influence. A total of 49 folks were arrested for outstanding warrants. As Cliff Claven of Cheers says, “It’s a little known fact,” the majority of our warrant arrests come from car stops made for such reasons as defective license plate lamp, driving without headlights or cracked windshield. More warrant arrests frequently are made after identifying the passengers.

A short vehicle pursuit and ultimately a foot pursuit in the early morning hours of March 22nd resulted in the arrest of one male on a felony warrant and Driving Under Revocation. Now he has to also deal with Eluding and Obstructing. As the deputies say, “They can run……”

Larimer County Dive Rescue was called out at 10:30 P.M. on Friday to the remove a vehicle from the Poudre River near Picnic Rock. No one was in the vehicle at the time. Colorado State Patrol is doing the investigation.

Character First trait for the month of March is Flexibility, willingness to change plans or ideas according to the direction of my authorities.

Deputy Harvey Hildreth, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office since June of 2005 on a Permanent Resident Card and came to us from serving in Her Majesty’s Forces of the British Army, received his citizenship and naturalization papers on March 21st. Harvey is quite proud to be a citizen of the United State of America and we’re pleased to have him on board. Plus his accent “classes up the joint.”

Deputy Robert Yone, who thwarted the suicide attempt of an inmate last week, will receive a Life Saving Commendation from the Sheriff.

Effective March 21, 2007, the following Deputies will be promoted to Corporal: Ian Stewart, Brian Wangler, Chad Day and Ryan Alberts.

So until next week,“that’s all she wrote.”
